Why We Choose Yarn Over Wool
At Croche’ohlogy, the materials we use reflect what we care about—thoughtful design, long-lasting quality, and a gentle impact on the world around us. That’s why we choose to work exclusively with yarn, and not wool, in all of our handmade products.
Wool has been a go-to fiber for generations, but it often comes with a complicated backstory. From ethical concerns to environmental impact, wool production isn’t always aligned with conscious, modern values. At its core, it relies on animal-based farming systems, which can raise concerns about welfare, overconsumption of resources, and traceability. For us, the decision to avoid wool is simple: we want our process to be as kind, transparent, and low-impact as possible.
Yarn offers us all of that—and more. Whether it’s soft cotton, textured blends, or naturally dyed threads, yarn gives us the freedom to create pieces that are both beautiful and versatile. It’s breathable, durable, and gentle enough for daily use, including items meant for sensitive skin or everyday wear.
One of the things we love most about yarn is how well it supports a reusable lifestyle. Many of our pieces—like our signature crocheted totes and carry-alls—are made to replace single-use items. A thoughtfully-made bag can take the place of hundreds of plastic ones. A durable pouch can stand in for throwaway packaging or fast-fashion accessories. These aren’t just stylish alternatives—they’re long-term habits wrapped up in something functional and personal.
Yarn is also incredibly practical. It’s easier to care for than wool, often more resilient, and fits naturally into busy routines. Most of our items can be reused without any fuss, which helps them stay in use longer—and out of landfills.
Choosing yarn over wool isn’t about compromise. It’s about creating with intention. It’s about making products that reflect what we value: simplicity, sustainability, and a softer kind of craftsmanship.
Every piece we make is a quiet step toward a more thoughtful way of living—and it all starts with the yarn we use.
